Universities Sign for Campus Sustainability

March 20, 2025, will mark a milestone in the commitment of Colombian universities to sustainability. During the Assembly of Members of the Green Building Council Colombia (Colombia GBC), the official signing of the Sustainable University Campus Manifesto will take place, a document that outlines the roadmap for transforming academic spaces into models of sustainability, resilience, and environmental innovation.

This manifesto arises in response to the significant environmental challenges facing the planet, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and the need to adopt sustainable development models. Universities, as centers of knowledge and the formation of new generations, play a strategic role in building a future that is more responsible for the environment and society.

A Commitment with Action and Measurable Results

The Manifesto establishes a total of nine concrete commitments that each signing university will assume to advance toward sustainable university campuses. These commitments include:

  • Initial Diagnosis: Evaluation of the current state of campuses in terms of infrastructure, energy, materials, water, transportation, well-being, and education.
  • Definition of 2030 Goals: Setting improvement objectives in at least fifteen key indicators.
  • Action Plan: Implementation of concrete strategies with assigned resources and responsible parties.
  • Monitoring and Reporting: Continuous tracking of progress and transparency in communicating results.
  • Interinstitutional Collaboration: Active participation in the Green Building CounciColombia (Colombia GBC) sustainable campuses working group to share experiences and solutions.
  • Carbon Emission Reduction: Compliance with the goals established in the National Roadmap for Net Zero Carbon Buildings.
  • Promotion of Renewable Energy: Implementation of sustainable energy sources in university infrastructure.
  • Education for Sustainability: Integration of sustainability as a cross-cutting theme in academic curricula.
  • Participation and Awareness: Promotion of a culture of sustainability within the university community through awareness and engagement programs.

Key Areas of Intervention

The manifesto encompasses a comprehensive approach to sustainability, including:

  • Environment and Infrastructure: Design of green spaces and efficient buildings.
  • Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Optimization of energy consumption and reduction of emissions.
  • Materials and Circularity: Responsible use of resources and waste management.
  • Water: Efficient consumption and use of alternative sources.
  • Transportation: Promotion of sustainable mobility alternatives.
  • Well-being: Creation of healthy environments for the university community.
  • Education and Research: Incorporation of sustainability into academic training and research.

Towards a Sustainable Future in Higher Education

The signing of the Sustainable University Campus Manifesto during the Assembly of Members of Green Building Council Colombia (Colombia GBC) represents a collective commitment by universities to lead the transition toward environmentally responsible academic environments. This initiative is expected to serve as a reference for other institutions in the region and contribute to consolidating an educational sector aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.

We invite all universities to join this initiative and be part of a movement that will transform higher education in Colombia and the world.
